Problem:
Online learning platforms often struggle with low student engagement and participation. Traditional discussion boards and forums fail to create a dynamic and interactive environment, resulting in decreased motivation and retention among students..

Solution:
Nuubi addresses these issues by providing a platform that incorporates interactive group chats, discussion forums, and Q&A sessions. Nuubi encourages active participation, fostering a vibrant and supportive online learning community.

Overview
Nuubi is an app designed to enhance online learning with interactive group chats, discussion forums, and Q&A sessions. It features gamification elements like points, badges, and leaderboards to boost engagement. My role on the Account and notifications team was to make a concise and clear profile for users to be engaged in actively participating in discussion forums as well as meeting their educational goals.
Research Objective:

To understand what motivates users to stay active in group
communication platforms and see how Nuubi can use
gamification to enhance engagement.

Research
First, we set out to see and understand who our competitors are and what they are doing. Beginning with a competitive analysis analyzing the differences between Nuubi, GroupMe, Slack, and Discord.
Result:
Key Takeaways:

- Users like seeing their role and contributions within a group.
- Achievement systems work best when they’re visible but non-intrusive.
-Real-time and historical activity metrics can encourage consistent engagement.

Synthesis
From research, we learned that Nuubi users value recognition, visibility, and streamlined navigation. We created user journey maps to support a better customizable profile page.
Design
With a user flow locked in, the sketching process began, about how a clear and concise profile page with multiple elements might be integrated into the Nuubi app.

It was important to consider how this new feature could be integrated into the existing Information Architecture, and take on the established branding styles and personality.
Our Low Fidelity Prototype brought the sketches to life, and allowed us to explore and test various ways of displaying the profile page and edits made to each users profile.

Our Solution:

We created and tested a Profile & Analytics Dashboard that enables users to:

  • See their contributions in a visual timeline
  • Earn and display badges for milestones
  • Track activity streaks and engagement time
  • View analytics on group interactions and participation trends

This transformed the profile into a
personalized hub that encourages consistent community involvement.

Iteration
We conducted Usability Testing of our LowFi Prototype on 3 volunteers in order to identify areas needing improvement for our next iteration…as well as to validate that our new feature was intuitive and allowed for more profile customization.
On the Profile page, some users suggested having the ability to see collected badges, and analytics to track their time spent on the app.
Notifications where also a key features that users preferred to have a seperate button in the navigation bar under a bell to look at all recent notifications

drumroll please.....

High Fidelity Prototype
The team addressed the bugs listed above, and incorporated the existing brand identity. It was important that the new feature(s) felt integrated into the existing Information Architecture and UI of the Nuubi app.

...but even WE are imperfect

Next Steps
Moving forward, the focus will be on integrating user feedback to refine existing features and add new ones. Enhancements will be made to improve performance and scalability, ensuring the app can handle a growing user base. Efforts will also be directed towards expanding the app's availability across different platforms and devices, to attract more users and boost adoption within the education sector. Our work here is certainly not done... we still have questions to consider and business needs to investigate:

Future Designs: The addition of a more centrealized analytics page that allows users to have an interactive slider similar to the one you see on your daily weather app.
